TRUST/FALL
This short series tells the story of my experience of feeling terribly afraid to come back to the studio after a long period of absence. It felt akin to a leap of faith- knowing well that the act of painting , for me, can lead to a flareup of chronic illness, feelings of failure, dissatisfaction, and self-doubt. The push and pull of work/rest, creates much tension in my personal and creative life, and in order to continue any creative practice, I have had to come to terms with several truths, and learn to work in a way that supports my overall wellbeing. This is very much a work in progress! These fast, sharp works, were intended to be an exercise in the unconscious and letting go. Trying to dis-allow rational decision making, which is more difficult than you would believe. While immersed in this practice, I had an encounter with a pointy man, who is a force to be reckoned with. And found myself trying to make bargains with him in order to not run faster than my feet allow. He gets carried away, you know. I have been writing about this, and as always, these passages have become just as important part of my practice as painting. I needed a bridge to cross from where I was, to where I may go- these little works are the bridge. Love, Kiya
